ESCAPED PRISONER IS 'GOING HOME'

A six-day manhunt for an escaped prisoner ended Saturday night in the arrest of the man without incident.

Raymond C. Beattie, 41, escaped from the Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville on Halloween. He was spotted Saturday night in the backyard of a Jetersville resident in Amelia County.

Nottoway County Chief Deputy Corky Abernathy said the resident talked to Beattie for a short time before calling police.

Beattie was unarmed and in good condition, Abernathy said.

He escaped from the jail exercise yard after serving more than a year of a 14-year sentence for unlawful wounding, assault and battery, probation violations and contempt of court.

Beattie was taken to Nottoway County Jail, where he was being processed Saturday night in preparation for his return to Piedmont Regional Jail.

``He's going home,'' Abernathy said.
