Deputy is lifesaver

WYTHEVILLE - A Wythe County deputy has been nominated for commendation after saving the life of an 8-day-old baby girl.

Deputy Brian Boze responded to an early morning emergency call Oct. 28 on U.S. 52 north of Wytheville about a baby who had stopped breathing. He had to clear the child's breathing passage twice but, when Rescue Squad members arrived, she was breathing on her own.

Sheriff Wayne Pike said members of his department learn first aid as part of their training. He said he would nominate Boze for commendation.

Wytheville break-ins

WYTHEVILLE - Seven Wytheville businesses in the eastern part of town were all hit by thieves on the same night, one week ago.

Wytheville police reported break-ins last Sunday at Blue Ridge Rehabilitative Services, All-State Insurance, Durham's Restaurant, Ocean Bay Restaurant, Pure Country Steakhouse, Farm Credit, and the dental office of Dr. Vic Camden.

Authorities said the thieves seemed interested in cash, not property.

Gas contamination

WYTHEVILLE - A search for gasoline contamination is going on in the eastern part of Wytheville.

Dan Manweiler, with the state Department of Environmental Quality, said drilling last month in six locations east of Estep Tire Co. showed no major soil contamination. The search is now being extended to the bedrock level.

He said preliminary indications show contamination where the topsoil meets bedrock. Results from groundwater testing should be ready soon, he said.
