Sixth grade/Glenvar Elementary School
Kids may find them challenging and fun, and parents may dread them. But to Judy Goodwin, sixth-grade teacher at Glenvar Elementary in Roanoke County, projects are an important educational tool.
"Projects really make learning more fun," she said. "They bring the material to life." When Goodwin's sixth-graders were studying Egypt, for example, they made mummies, sphinxes and posters on the subject. "Hands-on kinds of projects make school more interesting for the student and the teacher," Goodwin said.
In her 23 years as an educator, Goodwin has taught fourth, fifth and sixth grade. She finds sixth-graders "independent and interesting."
A Richmond native who moved to the Roanoke area because her college roommate taught here, Goodwin met her husband at Glen Cove Elementary School in Roanoke County when they both taught there. He now teaches at Mason's Cove Elementary in Roanoke County.
When away from the classroom, Goodwin enjoys reading, walking and shopping.
