2 NEWSPAPERS OFFER SUPPORT FOR COLEMAN

Independent U.S. Senate candidate Marshall Coleman picked up the endorsements Sunday of The Southwest Times of Pulaski and The News Messenger of Christiansburg.

The Bristol Herald Courier declined to endorse any of the candidates in an editorial Sunday. The newspaper said Democratic incumbent Charles Robb is tarnished by personal scandal, Republican challenger Oliver North is a ``still-habitual liar,'' and Coleman is an ``opportunist who hopes to rebuild his own flagging political career'' with his campaign.

The Southwest Times praised Coleman's character and experience.

``[Coleman] is the lone candidate in this Senate race whose character has never come into question ... Take away his obvious flip-flop on the abortion issue, and Coleman's character slate is spotless,'' the newspaper said.

The News Messenger editorial said of Coleman: ``On the issues, his positions are more in keeping with Virginia.''

Robb has seven endorsements from newspapers that serve Virginia, Coleman six and North three.
