The James Madison field hockey team will be the third seed when the NCAA tournament opens this week.
The Dukes earned a first-round bye and will host the winner of the Thursday's game between Princeton and Penn State at 1 p.m. Sunday. Earlier this season, JMU (17-3-1) beat Princeton 2-1 and tied Penn State 2-2 in double overtime.
Other seeded teams earning first-round byes were No.1 North Carolina, No.2 Northwestern and No.4 Old Dominion.
Lynchburg's Kara Summers was voted the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's player of the year in field hockey in a vote of the league's coaches.
Summers finished first in the ODAC in scoring with 62 points in 21 games and helped lead the Hornets to their first conference title in four years.
Marjle Wasson of Hollins and Lisa Caruso of Roanoke also earned first-team honors. Lee Moody of Roanoke was named to the second team.
Jenn Kohler of Randolph-Macon was named the ODAC women's soccer player of the year in a vote by the league's coaches.
Kohler, a junior midfielder, finished the season ranked second in scoring with 55 points.
Marina Jackson and Erica Reineke of Washington and Lee were named to the All-ODAC first team, while Michelle Bauman made the second team. Five players from Roanoke earned second-team honors: Jenn Roessler, Laura Bukovec, Angela Amstutz, Jenn Miller and Kara Hedges.
North Cross earned the top seed for the Virginia Independent Conference volleyball tournament, which begins today.
The Raiders (21-2) have a first-round bye and will play Saturday at 9:30 a.m. against the winner of today's match between No.8 Virginia Episcopal (8-8) and No.9 Grace Christian (24-25).
Also today, No.13 Roanoke Catholic (1-12) opens play at No.4 Lynchburg Christian (18-9).
Old Dominion has received a basketball commitment from 6-foot-9 Reggie Bassette, whose play in summer tournaments has established him as the top public-school prospect in Virginia.
Bassette, a promising shot-blocker who averaged 10.8 points as a junior at Highland Springs, picked the Monarchs over Virginia, Minnesota and James Madison.
Bassette visited ODU this past weekend after telling the Richmond Times-Dispatch two weeks ago that he was not seriously considering the Monarchs.
