COTTON, Mrs. Magdalyn D. of Roanoke, died Monday, November 7, 1994. She was born October 14, 1913 in Wilmington, N.C. Daughter of the late Charles and Bevvie Davis. Mrs. Cotton was a very active member of the South Roanoke United Methodist Church since moving to Roanoke in 1959. She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace P. Cotton. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Lawrence M. and Sylvia H. Cotton, New Bern, N.C., Philip W. and Ann C. Cotton, Charleston, S.C.; four grandsons; one brother, Dr. Donald F. Davis, Greenville, N.C.; an uncle, Dr. Robert Fales, Wilmington, N.C.; 16 nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 9, 1994, at South Roanoke United Methodist Church with Dr. Donald H. Roberts, Dr. T. Eugene Carter and Dr. M. Douglas Newman officiating. COX, Helen Jane Griffith, 85, of Marion, died Monday, November 7, 1994, Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Walter Cox and was of the Baptist Faith. DANIEL, Rawley Fleet, 75, of Richmond, died Tuesday, November 8, 1994, after a brief illness. A retired banking executive, Mr. Daniel was born in Cape Charles, the son of the late John Warren and Martha Fleet Daniel. He had lived in Richmond since graduating from the University of Richmond, where he had served his alma mater as president of the General Alumni Association and, at the time of his death, as a member of the Executive Committee of the Boatwright Society. As a banker for over 40 years, he was the Executive Vice-President of the Virginia Bankers Association for ten years prior to joining State Planters Bank, the forming bank of United Virginia Bankshares, now Crestar. At the time of his retirement from Crestar, he was Senior Vice-President for Government Relations/Investor Relations. Mr. Daniel was well-known for his service to church and community. He was former president of the Richmond Rotary Club, an elder and Sunday School teacher at First Presbyterian Church, and an appointee to numerous government commissions. He was a member of ODK, national leadership fraternity, Kappa Alpha Order, and The Country Club of Virginia. He was veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theatre. Mr. Daniel is survived by his wife of 51 years, Josephine Pullen Daniel; four children, Martha Jane D. Hudnall, Lynchburg, John Warren Daniel II and Marvin Pullen Daniel, Richmond, and Christopher Fleet Daniel, New Hope, Pa.; six grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Cary Street Road in Richmond, 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 10, 1994. MAXEY, James Terry Sr., 65, of Amarillo, Texas, formerly of Roanoke, passed away Monday, October 31, 1994, after a battle with cancer. He was formerly employed by Hennis Freight Lines and until his illness, was employed by Frey-Miller Trucking Company of California. He was a son of the late James C. (Cab) and Gladys Wood Maxey. Surviving are his wife, Bernetta L. Maxey; his sons, James T. Maxey Jr., Escondido, Calif., Curtis Maxey, of the home, Gary (Kenny) Maxey, Roanoke, Steve Maxey, Tucson, Ariz.; three granddaughters; and Crystal, a very special great-granddaughter that he wanted so much to watch grow up; a brother, Dean Maxey and his wife, Mary, Blue Ridge; his sisters, Marie Ham and her husband, Robert, Roanoke, Betty Overstreet and her husband, Eddie, Hardy, Esther Williams and her husband, John, Hardy. A lifelong resident of Giles County, she was born at Pearisburg, Va. on January 2, 1918 and was the daughter of the late Albert Bailey and Phenie Katherine Morris Runions. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Runions and Avery Runions; and a sister, Maxine R. Hendrickson. She was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Charles Emory Meredith; a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Tim Burns of Peterstown, W.Va.; a granddaughter, Katherine Jo Burns, Peterstown, W.Va.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Cecil and Joyce Runions, Gap Mills, W.V a., Fred and Charlotte Runions, Pence Springs, W.Va.; two sisters, Inez Wilkinson, Narrows, and Maycil Wiley, Rich Creek, Va.; a niece, DeLois Wiley, Rich Creek; her special care and devotion allowed Clarice to remain at home until her passing. WOOD, John Edward Sr., 88, of Huddleston, passed away Tuesday, November 8, 1994, in the St. John's Nursing Home. He was born August 22, 1906, in Bedford County, a son of the late Claude Wood and Molly Crouch Wood. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irma Melissa Roberts Wood; a son, Ralph O. Wood and a daughter, Jacqueline Wood Rhymes. He was a retired mechanic with the Lynchburg Foundry and was a member of the Bethesda United Methodist Church. He is survived by four sons, Bryan V. Wood, Vinton, John W. Wood, Jr., Huddleston, Douglas R. Wood, Larry E. Wood both of Hurt; a daughter, Gloria W. Sloss, Bedford; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.
