RAINY-DAY OFFER OF RIDE RESULTS IN COUPLE'S MARRIAGE

Demonstrating that age is no boundary to true love, Radford seniors HARVEY MEADOWS and PEGGY PANNELL will tie the knot Saturday evening at 6 at Friendship Baptist Church, Third and Bolling streets, Radford. Their pastor, the Rev. Jim Davis, will officiate. Both are widowed; Meadows is 82, and Pannell is 66.

"I said I wasn't going to do it again, but I am," Pannell said Monday as the pair was on the way to get a marriage license. Meadows, on the other hand, said he never gave much thought to remarriage after he lost his wife two years ago.

"We're getting tired of staying in the house by ourselves," he said.

Meadows and Pannell live on opposite ends of Second Street in Radford. They plan to consolidate housekeeping in his house.

Although the couple has known each other "for years," it wasn't until after Meadows gave Pannell a ride home from church one rainy day about a year ago that they began keeping steady company. Meadows, a retired bus driver, now gives his intended a ride to church every Wednesday and Sunday.

"This lady, she won't even touch the steering wheel," he said, motioning to Pannell, who never learned to drive.

She works in Radford Community Hospital's housekeeping department.

Meadows and Pannell both are grandparents, and Meadows has several great-grandchildren.
