BYRD SCORES 110 IN WIN

Six players scored in double figures as William Byrd set a school record for points in a 110-41 rout of Rockbridge County on Tuesday night in the Blue Ridge District tournament.

The Terriers (15-6) advance to the second round against Lord Botetourt on Thursday night at Northside.

Cathy Smith had 20 points, nine rebounds and seven steals to lead a balanced William Byrd attack. Kelli Runyon had 14 points and nine steals, and Valerie Glynn and Wendy Hayden added 15 points each.

The Vikings opened strong and held off the Mountaineers in the first round of the Blue Ridge District tournament.

Terri Craig scored a career-high 23 points as Northside (7-12) posted its second-highest point total of the season. Tanya Holmes scored 12 points and hit two 3-pointers in the third quarter as the Vikings extended their lead.

NEW CASTLE - Angie Johnson scored seven of her game-high 16 points in the pivotal third quarter as fifth-seeded James River knocked off No. 4 Craig County 35-28 in the Pioneer District.

The Knights (7-14) outscored the Rockets 15-8 in the third, the only quarter in which the teams did not score the same number of points.

It was a tough offensive knight for Craig County (7-12), which shot just 16 percent from the floor (6-for-38). Chrissy Robertson led the Rockets with 13 points, seven below her average.
