HOKIES EXERCISE AUTHORITY

Virginia Tech was short-handed Tuesday night, but still had more than enough to win a men's basketball exhibition game.

The Hokies beat Court Authority 88-75 at Cassell Coliseum despite playing without forward Jim Jackson (back injury), forward-center Keefe Matthews (kneecap injury) and freshman forward Shawn Browne.

Browne's high school transcripts are stuck in an apparent mix-up in the NCAA's eligibility clearinghouse, Tech assistant athletic director Steve Horton said. The clearinghouse has yet to grant Browne's eligibility because, Horton said, Browne's Canadian high school changed names during his time there, causing confused clearinghouse officials to ask for transcripts from two high schools, one of which does not exist.

``I don't foresee that he's not a qualifier,'' Horton said. ``Why it's taking so long, I don't know. I'm going to make sure it gets done before the next [exhibition] game [Nov.16 against Croatia].''

Tech coach Bill Foster said Matthews, a 6-8 junior college transfer expected to contribute this season, may be sidelined for another 10 days because of a kneecap dislocation he suffered Friday.

Foster found much to his liking Tuesday night. Six players scored in double figures, led by awakening point guard Shawn Good, who had 17 points (6-for-8 from the field), seven rebounds, three assists and five turnovers - all of the miscues in the second half.

``He was fluid, but he was aggressive with his shot and he didn't let pressure [defenses] bother him,'' Foster said.

Ace Custis, in his first non-practice look at small forward, had 14 points, four rebounds, six assists, five steals and two turnovers.
