Mayo, a Republican who tied her candidacy to the Oliver North campaign, won in all of the district's four precincts.
The key issue in the campaign was Mayo's opposition to the proposed $19.7 million bond referendum, which passed and will be used to provide the county with a second middle school, as well as other capital projects. Griffith was a strong proponent of the proposed bond referendum.
"I thought there were probably two things that caused my defeat," Griffith said.
"Ollie North was running strong in this end of the county," he said. Also, "I took a strong position in favor of the bond referendum."
The bond referendum was defeated in the four precincts of the Fincastle district.
With 4 of 4 precincts reporting.
Mayo --1,109--59%
Griffith ---767--41%
