MARTINSVILLE ADVANCES IN PIEDMONT

Erica Brandon and Tresita Holland scored 14 points each to lead Martinsville to a 70-44 victory over Gretna on Tuesday night in the quarterfinal round of the Piedmont District tournament.

Sam Ferguson contributed 11 points and eight assists, and Tonya Martin scored 10 points for top-seeded Martinsville, which led 43-19 at halftime. Brandon also had eight rebounds and seven assists

The Bulldogs (18-3) advance to the semifinals Thursday against the winner of tonight's Magna Vista-Patrick County game.

Charita Dews scored a game-high 21 points for seventh-seeded Gretna.

BUENA VISTA - Senior Misty Snider and freshman Lindsey Coleman hit several free throws in the fourth quarter to lead the Fighting Blues past the Chargers in the first round of the Pioneer District tournament.

Snider hit seven of 12 free throws in the fourth period and Coleman made all four of her attempts as Parry McCluer (14-5) made 22 of 31 free throws overall.

The Fighting Blues started slowly, trailing 9-5 after one quarter, but Snider scored eight of her 17 points in the second period and Chrystal Humphries scored eight of her 13 in the quarter to help Parry McCluer take a 24-17 halftime lead.

Bath County, which managed to tie the score in the second half, was led by Melanie Woods, who scored 17 points.

Northside 63

Alleghany 50

The Vikings opened strong and held off the Mountaineers in the first round of the Blue Ridge District tournament.

Terri Craig scored a career-high 23 points as Northside (7-12) posted its second-highest point total of the season. Tanya Holmes scored 12 points and hit two 3-pointers in the third quarter as the Vikings extended their lead.

Katie Craft scored 13 points and Valerie Broughman added 12 for Alleghany (8-13).

Rockbridge County 41

Six players scored in double figures as the Terriers set a school record for points in a game.

William Byrd (15-6) advances to the second round of the Blue Ridge District tournament against Lord Botetourt on Thursday night at Northside.

Cathy Smith had 20 points, nine rebounds and seven steals to lead a balanced William Byrd attack. Kelli Runyon had 14 points and nine steals, and Valerie Glynn and Wendy Hayden added 15 points each.

Rockbridge County (0-20) got a team-high seven points apiece from Latascha Miles and Jessica Austin.

Covington 42

Highland 24

COVINGTON - The Cougars got off to a slow start but the seventh-seeded Rams never could muster enough firepower in losing to second-seed Covington in the first round of the Pioneer District tournament.

Michelle Jeter scored 11 points to lead the Cougars, who led 7-4 after one quarter.

Covington (16-4) plays the Parry McCluer-Bath County winner at James River at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
