LIQUOR BY THE DRINK APPROVED IN DISTRICT

Voters in Botetourt County's Amsterdam District gave approval Tuesday night to liquor by the drink. The district became the first in the county to allow mixed drinks in restaurants.

The vote was 1,196 in favor to 1,117 against.

County officials have said that liquor by the drink was necessary to economic development in the district, which borders Interstate 81's exit 150 at Troutville. The U.S. 220 corridor from the exit to Daleville is seen as a prime commercial-development spot for the county.

Officials are hoping the new law will prompt several hotels and high-quality restaurants to locate in the area.
