Volvo-GM will set up a Technical Material Analysis Center in the park as part of its quality control program, with up to six employees stationed there.
The action followed an executive session at a special called meeting of council Tuesday.
Council also awarded a $59,795 contract to Landmark Builders of Dublin to renovate parts of its 10,400-square-foot warehouse building.
The town has applied for federal funds to follow this renovation with others, along with entrance improvements and site work. Once all this is complete, the building will be marketed to prospective industries.
Council agreed to sell 5.1 acres of surplus town property on Virginia 747 and 1030 outside the corporate limits to RGM Erectors of Wytheville for $35,000. RGM is expected to develop offices and a lodge facility on the property.
The town has completed the acquisition of 170 acres donated by Burlington Industries, including 359,000 square feet of building space and a dormant water production plant with a capacity of 2.25 million gallons per day. Burlington is to keep 30 acres, and has agreed to close its wastewater treatment plant within two years when public sewer service is expected to be available.
