EX-`SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE' WRITER DIES

Original ``Saturday Night Live,'' writer Michael O'Donoghue, a two-time Emmy Award winner who later wrote screenplays for Gilda Radner and Bill Murray, died Tuesday. He was 54.

O'Donoghue died of a massive cerebral hemorrhage, said his wife, Cheryl Hardwick.

He wrote many of the irreverent late-night show's most memorable skits, including the ``Wolverines'' sketch that opened the first show with John Belushi.

O'Donoghue's writing for ``Saturday Night Live'' earned him Emmys in 1976 and 1977.

He also co-wrote Murray's 1988 film ``Scrooged'' and Radner's 1979 movie ``Gilda Live.''

On camera, O'Donoghue portrayed demented characters with a penchant for violence.

He stayed with the show through the 1980 season, then returned for one more run in 1985.

Before writing for the Not Ready for Prime Time Players, he worked at National Lampoon.
