JOHN and MABLE COCHRAN will be honored Friday during a banquet at First Baptist Church in downtown Roanoke for their leadership in the congregation for 25 years. Cochran is minister of education and pastoral care.
A GREATER ROANOKE VALLEY HOLINESS RALLY, sponsored by the Roanoke Valley Nazarene churches, will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. at First Church of the Nazarene, 728 Highland Ave. S.E. The Rev. Dr . James Diehl, a general superintendent of the denomination, will speak.
A THANKSGIVING SERVICE, sponsored by Belmont, Campbell Memorial, Fifth Avenue, Green Ridge and Peace Presbyterian churches, will be held Wednesday. The service, the fourth joint event by the congregations this year, will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Campbell Memorial Church, 1130 Hardy Road in Vinton. Communion will be part of the service, and the Rev. Wilson Gunn of Peace Church will preach.
LUTHERAN BROTHERHOOD VOLUNTEERS from Branch 8264 of the fraternal insurance company recently raised more than $1,200 during the fund drive for WVFT, Public Radio. Branch members also obtained a matching gift from the national headquarters in Minneapolis, Minn. Lutherans with insurance in the company have assisted in several Roanoke Valley service programs, including Habitat for Humanity and Roanoke Area Ministries.
ETHEL BORN, a Salem United Methodist leader active internationally in church-related peace efforts for the Middle East, has returned from the sixth assembly of the World Conference on Religion and Peace held in Rome. The meeting brought together religious leaders, including Pope John Paul II, from more than 600 religious and peace groups. Born will speak about a recent trip to Russia on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at West End United Methodist Church, 1221 Campbell Ave. S.W. starting at 7 p.m.
THE REV. DR. VERNIE BOLDEN has completed a three-year pastorate at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church. He and his wife will continue to live in Roanoke in retirement, and he will teach part time at New River Community College in Dublin.
PATTERSON MEMORIAL GRACE BRETHREN CHURCH, 5512 Hollins Road, has scheduled a concert by "A Few Good Men" singers of Cary, N.C. The program will be given Saturday at 7 p.m. following refreshments and fellowship at 6. An offering will be taken.
RALEIGH COURT PRESBYTERIAN congregation has approved a fund-raising drive for an addition to and renovation of its building at 1837 Grandin Road S.W. A professional consultant will be employed. Growth of young families was cited as a reason for the addition.
OAK GROVE CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN has dedicated a fully equipped playground, The Ark, on its property off Virginia 419. The playground includes a model of an ark in which children can play as well as model animals. More than 40 members participated in the project.
LISA FERNALD, a recent graduate of Roanoke College and a native of Maine, has joined the staff of the West End Center, an ecumenical service center for children in inner city Roanoke. She will work with Kaye Hale, director.
NEW LIFE TEMPLE QUARTET will perform Sunday at 7 p.m. at Cloverdale Church of the Brethren on Read Mountain Road. Fellowship time will follow.
THE ANNOUNCERS, a gospel singing group, will perform Sunday at 11 a.m. at Northside Christian Church, 5110 Florist Road N.W. A nursery will be open.
MACEDONIA BAPTIST CHURCH, 2910 Cove Road N.W., has scheduled a concert by the New Direction Gospel Singers on Sunday at 6 p.m.
THE REV. RON E. THOMPSON will be the evangelist for revival services Sunday through Wednesday at Trinity Church of the Brethren on U.S. 220 south of Fincastle. Services will be each night at 7, and guest choirs from community churches will sing. Thompson is ordained in the Grace Brethren Church. A former pastor of Patterson Memorial Grace Brethren, he has been executive director of Brethren Evangelistic Ministries, based in Roanoke, for the past five years.
"THE BURNING HELL," an evangelistic film, will be shown Saturday at 7 p.m. at New Grace Baptist Church, 1214 Peters Creek Road N.W. Especially for youth, it will include a pizza party. Call 389-7732 for a ride.
BETH ISRAEL SYNAGOGUE MEMBERS will dedicate a Habitat for Humanity home on Kellogg Avenue Northwest on the first night of the festival of Hanukkah, Nov. 27, at 5:30 p.m. The house is one of only a few constructed by a Jewish group in America. Hanukkah refreshments, the lighting of candles and music by Benedict Goodfriend, a member of the Kandinsky Trio, will be included.
