MUSIC MASTER: Showtimers' production of "Cole" traces approximately 50 years in the life of one of the most prolific composers of this century. In an anthology format, 12 talented cast members follow Cole Porter through his years at Yale, in Paris, on Broadway, in Hollywood and back to Broadway again, along the way, re-creating such beloved musical classics as "From This Moment On" and "I Love Paris."

The show opens tonight and runs through Saturday and again Thursday through Nov. 19 at 8 p.m. Performances Sunday and Nov. 20 are at 3 p.m. Tickets are $9, $4 for students without reservations. Call 774-2660.

SHOP TILL YOU DROP at two anxiously anticipated annual affairs that benefit worthy causes.

The YMCA Crafts Fair, this year marking its 25th anniversary, runs today through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. at Virginia Tech's Squires Student Center, Blacksburg. Proceeds help YMCA community-service programs, such as home repairs for low-income and/or elderly people; tutoring in public schools; and an environmental group. One dollar admission lets you sample wares from 103 booths, including leather, weaving, ceramics and pottery, candles, flags, jewelry plus many new crafts. The Stocked Market Holiday Bazaar, today from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center, Salem, is a major fund-raiser for the Junior League. This is the event's sixth year. Admission of $5, free for children age 12 and under, gains entry into a veritable wonderland of gifts, gourmet foods, jewelry, toys, clothes and more, presented by more than 100 merchants from across the country. DEFIES DESCRIPTION: Ask five people to describe David Wilcox's music and you'll get five very different answers, but all in a way saying a sort of folksy-rock thing. However you interpret Wilcox's unique sound, you can hear it tonight at 9 p.m. at the Forest Park Country Club, 1841 Mulberry Road, Martinsville. The concert alone costs $12.50; the concert, plus a meet-the artist reception held from 7-8 p.m. will cost $20. The event is sponsored by the Piedmont Arts Association. Call 632-6155.

BEST OF BLUEGRASS: Five-time world champion fiddler Buddy Pendleton joins the Clearwater band for some old favorites tonight at 7:30 at Reynolds Homestead, Critz. Clearwater, which has placed among the top 10 bands at Galax in the last 10 years and which this year was voted "Entertainers of the Year" in the Pickaboo Awards, has more than a few individual winners among its ranks, including Ron Pendleton, who won individual first place on mandolin at Galax this year, and Jeanette Williams, the 1994 Virginia Champion Female Vocalist. HAPPY HOLIDAYS HOW-TO: Thanksgiving marks the start of a supposedly joyous season, largely revolving around children. But unrealistic expectations and unwarranted temper tantrums can sometimes turn the the season into a nightmare instead.

"Holidays & Kids: How to Go Over the River and Through the Woods Without Going Over the Edge" gives practical advice on how to establish family traditions, set realistic expectations and keep the holidays happy. The community health lecture, sponsored by the Lewis-Gale Foundation and Honeytree Early Learning Centers, is free, but due to limited seating, preregistration is recommended. TURTLE TALK: Boston-based quartet Voice of the Turtle draws from 500 years of history and diverse cultures and sings and performs on more than 20 exotic instruments in presenting music of the Sephardim, Jews who were driven out of Spain in the Expulsion of 1492 and who ultimately settled in Turkey, Morocco, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Greece, Rhodes, Palestine and America. The quartet is comprised of internationally acclaimed musicians Derek Burrows, Lisle Kulbach, Jay Rosenberg and Judith Wachs. The group's melodious mix of ballads, love songs, holiday, wedding and children's songs are performed in Judeo-Spanish, narrated in English, and accompanied by instruments from the Near and Middle East and medieval and renaissance Europe.
