WEBB WEARS DOWN COUGAR OPPONENTS

Eric Webb, never the retiring sort on a football field, has become an ever-increasing catastrophe for Pulaski County High's opponents as the season has progressed.

In what arguably was Webb's finest performance this year, he laid waste to Patrick Henry with 114 rushing yards, a 25-yard pass reception that set up a touchdown, four quarterback sacks and a pair of what is known around the Cougars' field house as ``hits of the week.'' The Cougars rolled 45-14.

Arguably his best performance?

Who's arguing?

Well, Webb is.

``I had a good game against William Fleming,'' he said. ``I think that was my best one.''

Perhaps only Webb can really appreciate the nuances of his own destructive capability. But for a frame of reference, Patrick Henry appears to be the superior team to Fleming.

The Patriots came into the game with only two losses, both tough ones to excellent teams - George Washington of Danville and E.C. Glass. But PH was no match for the Cougars.

Webb clearly had plenty to do with that.

``I came through at the right time,'' he said.

Certainly a fine example was his work while running the football. The yardage total was his best of the year.

``The line blocked very well,'' he said. ``They got after it and opened the holes for the running backs. [Backs] Derrick [Hunter] and Tim [Davis] and Jawan [Clark] ran hard. That opened it up for all of us and the yards just piled up.''

On the other side of the line of scrimmage, all that was piling up were Patrick Henry ball carriers. Webb, deployed at linebacker, had a lot to do with that, too.

First, the sacks.

``They came to me,'' he said. ``My keys were telling me to come up and support [against the run] and I was just in the backfield with the quarterback.''

As for the big hits, they're a Webb trademark.

``Last week [against Petersburg], Jon Lilly [a Cougars defensive end] had a big game and I didn't do much,'' he said. ``It seemed like Petersburg was always throwing the ball or running to the opposite side of the field from me. I wanted to get some good hits this week. It's a pride thing.''

Other performances of note:

Greg Shockley of Blacksburg threw for 213 yards and four touchdowns, Shane Beamer caught five passes for 109 yards and a touchdown, and Steve Cherry scored 13 points including a 23-yard TD reception and a 31-yard field goal as the Indians routed Carroll County 38-7.

Norman Perkins rushed for 167 yards and three touchdowns as Narrows crushed Galax 51-14.

Marlon Wesley of Radford rushed for 132 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-12 victory over Floyd County.

Raypheal Milton of Giles accounted for 209 yards total offense and three touchdowns, including two scored, in a 42-8 victory over Grayson County.
