Thanksgiving services

RADFORD - The Radford-Fairlawn Ministerial Association sponsors two community Thanksgiving services:

Sunday, Nov. 20, 7 p.m., the Presbyterian Church of Radford, 201 Fourth St., is the host of the Radford service, with the Rev. Lyle Morton of New Mount Olive United Methodist Church.

Wednesday, Nov. 24, 7:30 p.m., the Fairlawn service is at Fairlawn Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Demps Overcash of Fairlawn Church of God.

Offerings of canned, non-perishible food for the Pantry Shelf are accepted at both services. Cash donations benefit the associations' ministries, which include the Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread, the Radford Clothing Bank, the Emergency Fund administered by Social Services, the Pantry Shelf and the Radford CROP Walk.

A nursery is available at both services.

Community dinner

BLACKSBURG - St. Michael Lutheran Church, 2308 Merrimac Road, opens its doors to the community Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 24, for Thanksgiving dinner. The dinner is for people unable to provide their own or who may be alone during the holiday and want the fellowship. Two shifts, limited to 150 guests each, will be served at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Reservations close Monday, Nov. 14. Call 552-8951, 4-6 p.m., to reserve a place. Transportation is available.

Reptile symposium

BLACKSBURG - Veterinarians, veterinary technicians and students from several veterinary schools gather Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 12 and 13, at Virginia Tech for the "Reptile and Pocket Pet Symposium." The event, sponsored by the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine and the Wildlife and Exotic Animal Club, covers such esoteric topics as "Iguana Management and Diseases" and "Restraint and Anesthesia of Rabbits and Rodents."

Tortoises, rat snakes, iguanas, gerbils, guinea pigs and rabbits are among the many animals the symposium sessions will deal with. Approximately 230 people have signed up for the symposium, said Dr. Stephen Smith of the veterinary school's faculty. He said the high interest in the symposium reflects a growing interest in non-traditional pets.
