BLACKSBURG UNITED METHODIST SITE OF MUSIC FESTIVAL

The combined voices of 165 men, women and children from 13 churches from Salem to Galax will ring out this afternoon at 5 at Blacksburg United Methodist Church on Church Street. Composer-conductor Austin Lovelace of Denver, Colo., directs the massed choir for the NEW RIVER-ROANOKE VALLEY MEET THE COMPOSER FESTIVAL. The handbell choir of Christiansburg Presbyterian Church also performs.

Lovelace, 75, has more than 700 church music compositions and six books to his credit. A native of North Carolina, he retired in 1986 as minister of music at Wellshire Presbyterian Church in Denver. He also is liturgist and organist for hymn festivals. For more information, call 552-5424.

\ The winning works in Blacksburg Baptist Church's NATIONAL SACRED CHORAL COMPOSITION will be performed - and cash prizes awarded - Sunday during the 11 a.m. worship service at Blacksburg Baptist, 550 N. Main St. Marya Katz, who directs the choirs at Northside Presbyterian Church, Blacksburg, took top honors for her composition, "Come, Take my Hand."

The top three works are to be performed Sunday, along with a new composition by Joe Borden, Blacksburg Baptist's minister of music, that was commissioned especially for the occasion. The public is welcome. The competition drew almost 30 entries from several states.

\ St. Michael Lutheran Church, 2308 Merrimac Road, Blacksburg, opens its doors to the community Thanksgiving Day for THANKSGIVING DINNER for people unable to provide their own or who may be alone during the holiday and want the fellowship. There are two shifts, limited to 150 guests each, at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Reservations close Monday. Call 552-8951, 4-6 p.m., to reserve a place. Transportation is available.

The Radford-Fairlawn Ministerial Association will sponsor two community Thanksgiving services. The Radford service is Nov. 20, 7 p.m., at the Presbyterian Church of Radford, 201 Fourth St., with the Rev. Lyle Morton of New Mount Olive United Methodist Church. The Fairlawn service is Nov. 24, 7:30 p.m., at Fairlawn Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Demps Overcash of Fairlawn Church of God. Offerings of canned, nonperishible food for the Pantry Shelf are welcome. A nursery is available.

Starting Nov. 26, 7 p.m., the Roman Catholic community of St. Mary's, Christiansburg, celebrates Mass at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1845 Cambria St., with the Rev. Louis Benoit of Holy Family Parish, Pearisburg. The community has been holding services in the Knights of Columbus hall since June. The book "Baptized into One Body: The First 165 Years of Christiansburg Presbyterian Church" by MONTY S. LEITCH has won the 1994 Robert Lee Stowe Award, given annually for the best published historical study of an American Presbyterian or Reformed congregation. Leitch, a Roanoke Times & World-News columnist, worked for two years on the 443-page project, which includes complete membership and baptismal records dating from 1827 to 1992.
