MATTHEWS SIDELINED BY SURGERY

Virginia Tech lost 6-foot-8 junior college transfer Keefe Matthews for six to eight weeks after Matthews underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Friday.

Matthews had dislocated his right kneecap and had been expected to return to practice next week. A news release from Tech did not indicate why the decision was made to operate on Matthews. The surgery, however, may keep him out until Jan.1; if so, he will miss 11 games. Team surgeon Marc Siegel said the surgery did not reveal ligament or cartilage damage.

Matthews averaged 19 points and 11.2 rebounds for Jacksonville (Texas) Junior College last year and would have seen plenty of playing time for the Hokies.

Cal Bowdler, son of a Virginia alumnus, has become the second in-state big man to pick Old Dominion over the Cavaliers.

Bowdler, a 6-9 post player from Rapahannock High in Warsaw, balked at UVa's recommendation that he spend a year at Fork Union Military Academy. Recruiting analyst Bob Gibbons said Bowdler has ``limitless potential'' and could become the best player in ODU's class.
