LIBERTY ROLLS PAST APPOMATTOX 41-7

BEDFORD - Mike Padgett threw for 256 yards and three touchdowns as Liberty rolled past Appomattox 41-7 in a Seminole District high school football game Friday night.

Padgett connected on scoring passes of 5 and 25 yards to J.J. Coles and threw another touchdown strike for 3 yards to Cory Gilmore. Padgett completed 17 of 28 passes for Liberty (5-5), which has 419 yards of total offense.

The Minuteman led 20-0 at halftime and built up a 41-0 lead before Appomattox (1-9) got its lone score in the fourth quarter on a 9-yard run by Forrest Moore.

Lord Botetourt 18

COVINGTON - Donald Downing's 52-yard punt return for a touchdown capped a fourth-quarter comeback that gave the Mountaineers a Blue Ridge District victory over the Cavaliers.

Lord Botetourt (3-7 overall, 0-5 Blue Ridge) led 18-2 in the first half and 18-8 at halftime, getting touchdown runs of 59 and 36 yards and a 61-yard punt-return touchdown from Wesley Cox, who finished with 233 rushing yards.

Alleghany (4-6, 2-3) drove 58 yards late in the fourth quarter, getting a fourth-and-3 conversion run by Chris Morris to put the ball on the Botetourt 25. Kevin Cook scored from 2 yards out with 3:37 left. Downing's 2-point conversion made it 18-16.

Downing's punt return, on which he faked past a would-be tackler at the 7, came with 1:33 left.

COVINGTON - William Stewart returned a fumble recovery 40 yards for a touchdown with two minutes left to help the Cougars defeat the Highlanders in a Pioneer District game for their fourth consecutive victory.

Glenvar (5-5, 2-3) was plagued by three lost fumbles - all in the second half. The turnovers, combined with Covington's stiff defense, allowed the Highlanders no points and only 95 yards of total offense in the second half.

Covington (5-5, 4-1) got two touchdowns from Stewart and one from Tom Luckett, who rushed for 118 yards on 24 carries.

NEW CASTLE - David Lambert scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 2-yard quarterback keeper with 4:07 remaining to help the Bears complete their best season in the three-year history of their football program.

The Bears open the Region C Division 1 playoffs next week.

Craig County (4-6) took a 12-0 lead on a pair of Robbie Huffman-to-Zachary Peters touchdown passes.

Lambert's put the Bears (7-3) ahead to stay with his scoring run and John Stinson scored from 2 yards out with 15 seconds to play.

MONETA - The Bees stormed out of the gate to a 41-0 halftime lead, scoring on their first play from scrimmage, and never looked back, as they dominated the Golden Eagles in Seminole District action.

Bees quarterback Jeff Landum led the way for Brookville (7-3, 7-3), passing for three touchdowns and running in another. Landrum threw for 169 yards.

Jeff English put Staunton River (2-8, 2-8) on the board in the third quarter, scoring on an 18-yard run. Kevin Martin add a 7-yard touchdown gallop later in the third.

\ Bath County 49

James River 16

BUCHANAN - Jamie Carroll rushed for 170 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries as the Chargers routed the Knights to capture the Pioneer District crown.

Bath County (9-1) finished 5-0 in district action and has the second-best record in school history.

Bath County held James River (2-8, 2-4) to 236 yards of total offense. Mark Whiting led the Knights' rushing attack with 6 carries for 68 yards, including a 29-yard touchdown run. Shahan Burrell had 14 carries for 57 yards and scored James River's other touchdown on a 3-yard run.

\ Christiansburg 66

Andra Beasley ran for 327 yards and five touchdowns on 18 carries as the Blue Demons pounded the host Terriers for a non-district win.

Beasley had scoring runs of 58, 44, 7, 12 and 7 yards as Christiansburg (5-5) pulled to .500.
