FLOYD - Jason Byrd and Chad Shaffner literally carried the Blue Devils to a comeback victory over the Buffaloes in a non-district matchup.

Shaffner ran for two touchdowns in the first quarter, but Floyd County (3-7) rallied and took a 19-13 lead on Dwayne Hale's 44-yard pass to Jason Pratt on the first play of the fourth quarter and Hale's two-point conversion pass to Jamie Warren.

Byrd, who finished with 209 yards on 37 carries, then took over for Grayson County (3-7). The running back scored on a 9-yard run and Shaffner connected on a two-point conversion pass.

After a blocked punt gave the Blue Devils possession at the Buffaloes' 12-yard line with 6:56 to play, Byrd punched it on a 1-yard run and Shaffner scored the decisive points on a conversion run. The quarterback finished with 136 yards on 19 carries.

Floyd County took the ensuing kickoff and drove to midfield, but fumbled away the ball. Grayson County then ran the ball and the clock, leaving the Buffaloes time for only one desperation pass that did not connect.

Jamie Warren led Floyd County with 79 yards rushing and Craig Reed added 76. Each scored a touchdown.

Glenvar answered later in the first quarter when quarterback Corey Willis ran 13 yards for the touchdown. The conversion run failed, but Glenvar tied the score at 6.

The Cougars took the lead for good in the third quarter after Tom Luckett, who rushed for 118 yards on 24 carries, scored on a 1-yard run. Barber's run gave Covington a 14-6 lead they would never relinquished.
