Pair o' docs

FORT CHISWELL - A husband-and-wife team began serving as interim family practitioners at the Fort Chiswell Clinic this month.

Dr. John Mathews, a family practitioner in Appomattox for 34 years before retiring in 1993, and Dr. Marlene Henley, with the Wolfe Medical Group Ltd. of Rocky Mount for 21 years, will have office hours from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Appointments can be made by calling 637-6641.

Both doctors are natives of Wise County. Mathews originally is from Big Stone Gap and completed his internship at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Henley is a native of Pound and has also been Ferrum College physician for 21 years.

Free clinic

WYTHEVILLE - Physicians in Wythe County are being interviewed to see if they would support establishment of a free medical clinic for Wythe and Bland counties.

The interviewing is being done by a citizens' group called Helping Overcome Poverty's Existence and should be completed this month, according to Mike Hall, director of Wythe County's Social Services department and HOPE chairman.

He estimated that it would then take three months to plan for the clinic. It could be started as early as next fall.

HOPE also is working on a housing plan for the two counties and, early next year, will organize an educational subcommittee to deal with issues such as low self-esteem affecting students from kindergarten through 10th grade.

The group's next meeting will be at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 8 in the Wytheville Municipal Building.

Happy New Year

WYTHEVILLE - A New Year's Eve dance, with Debra Dean and Friends providing the music, is being planned by the Wythe Arts Council Ltd. to help raise money for Wytheville's annual summer Chautauqua Festival.

It will be held at the Wytheville Community Center.

Tickets are $50 per couple in advance, or $60 at the door, and cover light buffet foods, favors and complimentary champagne at midnight. Tables for up to 10 people can be reserved, with larger group arrangements available by special request.

Advance tickets are available from Wythe Arts Council board members, the Wytheville Holiday Inn or the Wytheville NationsBank, Premier Bank, Charter Federal, First Virginia Bank-Southwest, First Union Bank or First Century Bank.
