PULASKI COUNTY FAMILY LOSES HOME TO FIRE

A Pulaski County family lost their home Friday night when fire broke out while they were at the movies.

Jerry Childress and his family discovered the fire when they returned, said Dublin Fire Chief Robbie Cecil.

The home, off U.S. 11 about two miles west of Dublin near the old Pulaski Drive-In, was a total loss, Cecil said.

About 20 Dublin firefighters battled the blaze from 11:30 p.m. Friday until 8 a.m. Saturday. Members of the Newbern Fire Department also helped, sending two trucks and a half-dozen firefighters, Cecil said.

The effort to contain the fire was stymied by the way the blaze traveled through several additions to the wood-and-brick two-story home, Cecil said.

The fire traveled up walls into ceilings and attic space, he said.

"It was a total loss. It gutted it completely on the inside," the fire chief said, estimating the damage at $60,000.

Cecil said Saturday afternoon a definite cause of the fire had not been established. An investigation was continuing, but the fire does not appear to be suspicious, he said.

The Childress family, including two children ages 10 and 11, lost everything, Childress said.

Cecil had no information on any community efforts to help the Childress family but said they did have home insurance and family to stay with.

"It was a bad thing," he said. ``It's bad to see anybody get burned out like that and lose everything they have.''
