FOUNDRY BLAST KILLS WORKER

An explosion at a Campbell County steel foundry killed one employee and injured five others, plant officials said.

The blast occurred Friday evening at the Intermet plant, company officials said. They said the explosion occurred after a leak in a water line near a holding furnace caused an eruption of molten iron.

James Megginson, 58, of Gladstone, died early Saturday at the University of Virginia burn center. He suffered third-degree burns on more than 85 percent of his body, hospital representatives said.

Megginson bore the brunt of the explosion, plant officials said. The other five workers were taken to Lynchburg General Hospital, where they were treated for minor burns and released.

The explosion is under investigation, said Jan Toennisson, Intermet's director of communications.

Investigators from the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry inspected the plant Saturday morning.
