TECH MEN FINISH 5TH IN DISTRICT

The Virginia Tech men's cross country team finished fifth Saturday and the Virginia women were 10th at the NCAA District III qualifying meet in Greenville, S.C.

The Hokies were led by former Cave Spring High School standout John Hawthorne, who placed 12th individually with a time of 31 minutes, 8 seconds on the 10-kilometer course. Tennessee and Alabama tied for first with 133 points, Tech was fifth with 180, Virginia was 15th and Radford was 40th.

The Cavaliers were 10th with 307 points in the five-kilometer women's race. Tech finished in a 22nd-place tie with Alabama-Birmingham.

In other sports in the region:

Junior Amy Mears ran a personal-best time of 18 minutes, 6 seconds at the NCAA Division III Regional Qualifier meet in Atlanta to help the Washington and Lee women's cross country team take second place behind host Emory.

Junior Josephine Schaeffer finished fourth as she and Mears made the all-region team.

The Washington and Lee men's team was third, led by freshman Jason Callen's 10th-place finish which helped him claim an all-region spot as the Generals behind second-place Mary Washington and first-place Christopher Newport. Roanoke College, which finished eighth in the men's competition, was led by J.J. Maybury, who came in fifth place to claim an all-region spot and also qualifies for the Division III championship meet in Rochester, N.Y.

Virginia Tech's stay in the Rolex Fall Regional Tennis Tournament ended early when three players were disqualified for missing their starting times. Oliver Mayo, Miki Pusztai and Adam Gottfried all were disqualified.
