FLOYD WINS THREE RIVERS

Floyd County scored the first 17 points as the Buffaloes stampeded Auburn 64-27 on Saturday night in the final of the Three River District girls' basketball tournament.

Laura Harman scored six points and Carrie Chaffin and Leigh-Ann Pursifull had four each in the game-opening surge.

Pursifull finished with a game-high 18 points as Floyd County (23-0) won its 50th consecutive game dating to last season

GALAX - The Maroon Tide, which beat Narrows in a playoff Monday to decide the regular-season championship, never was challenged by the surprising Pioneers in the Mountain Empire District tournament final.

Galax, which entertains Parry McCluer in the Region C tournament at 7 p.m. Tuesday, opened a 16-5 first-quarter lead and was ahead 31-7 at the half
