DAN RIVER WRAPS UP PIEDMONT

Erick Ferguson completed eight of 19 passes for 144 yards and three touchdowns as Dan River won the Piedmont District and clinched the No. 1 seed in the Group AA Division 3 playoffs Friday night with a 40-14 victory over Bassett.

The victory marks the first time a Pittsylvania County school has won the district in football.

Ferguson tossed touchdown passes of 51, 22 and 16 yards to three receivers as Dan River took a 20-7 halftime lead and never looked back.

The Wildcats (9-1 overall, 8-1 in the district), who clinched their best regular-season record ever, rolled up 339 yard of total offense compared with Bassett's 204.

The Bengals (7-3, 6-3) got 123 rushing yards from Clifford Wimbush, who scored one touchdown on a 56-yard burst.
