TEENS SMASH 57 MAILBOXES

Six juveniles armed with baseball bats damaged more than 50 mailboxes in south Botetourt County early Sunday morning.

Sheriff Reed Kelly said officers were able to apprehend the carload of boys - ranging in age from 13 to 16 - about 4:30 a.m., after a resident called to report a smashed mailbox.

The Salem, Roanoke and Botetourt County juveniles, whose names were not released because of their age, have admitted destroying 57 mailboxes, Kelly said.

The damage occurred in the Daleville, Troutville and Cloverdale areas. Kelly encouraged all who think their mailboxes might have been damaged by these boys to call the sheriff's department.

Some of the juveniles were taken into custody, Kelly said, and all likely will face charges.
