PASSENGER FROM LUXURY CRUISE MISSING AT SEA

Authorities searched off the coast of Virginia and North Carolina Sunday for a man who was reported missing from the luxury liner Queen Elizabeth 2.

The man, a 40-year-old U.S. citizen whose name was withheld, boarded the liner about a week earlier in Baltimore, Coast Guard officials said.

The man was last seen about 4 p.m. Saturday aboard the ship about 70 miles off Cape Hatteras, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Michael Davis of the Fifth District Command Center.

A Coast Guard plane and helicopter out of Elizabeth City, N.C., searched overnight. At daybreak Sunday, the Portsmouth-based cutter Aquidneck joined the 120-mile search from near Cape Hatteras to the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay.

The search was suspended at mid-afternoon pending any new developments.
