RINER CALENDAR SPOTLIGHTS OLD DAYS

The Riner Elementary Parent Teacher Association took a look back to the good old days for ideas about this year's fund-raiser.

With the help of Virginia Deal Lawrence, the PTA organized "Early Riner," a 1995 CALENDAR featuring old photos and a brief history of the Riner/Auburn area.

Lawrence, a Riner historian who taught second grade in Riner for 42 years, provided the calendar's photos taken between 1890 and 1920. The calendar's text is a summary of information she collected for her work "Memories of Riner" published in Mountainside in 1981.

The calendar, which started out this summer as a fund-raising project, serves as a piece of Riner history and a tribute to the older members of the community, said PTA president Tom Kegley. "It's taken on a greater aura," he said.

Longtime Riner residents may use the calendar to show their grandchildren how the hill they walked up to and from school each day, regardless of rain, snow and hail, looked when they were children.

The calendars are on sale for $5 at Riner Elementary School.

For more information, call the school at 382-5165.
