It will allow participants in the local Daily Bread program to spend the hour before their meal at the center annex with an artist or human service worker, talking and taking part in artistic activities ranging from drawing to molding clay and painting.
This weekly workshop will let participants interpret, document and present the stories of their lives in a culturally-expressive atmosphere. In the spring, an exhibit of the resulting artworks and writings will be scheduled.
``I am thrilled that American Express has chosen to fund our project,'' said center Executive Director Michael Dowell.
``The Daily Bread program is very strong in Pulaski. Everyone is enriched by the program - those helping serve the meals, and those needing the nourishment. Art nourishes the soul just as food nourishes the body,'' he said.
The project will cost about $8,000 altogether, he said. The center is seeking several other grants.
The American Express Foundation awarded grants to 105 organizations from its Volunteer Action Fund, which was started in April to recognize employees who volunteer in their communities.
Individuals or organizations interested in contributing to the Pulaski project can do so by contacting the Fine Arts Center at P.O. Box 309, Pulaski, Va. 24301.
