COUNCIL LOOKS AT 2-MILE TRAIL EXTENSION

Pulaski Town Council is expected to formally ask tonight for quick development and construction of the two-mile extension of the New River Trail from the Pulaski town limits to its depot building.

Council drew up a resolution asking the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation for a schedule outlining a timetable for the project, financed from a 1992 state parks and recreation bond issue which council also endorsed.

Council also is expected to act on an agreement with the Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce for the chamber's use of the depot. The chamber has been housed in the town Municipal Building.

The town's Public Operations Committee has met with representatives of the chamber and Raymond Ratcliffe Memorial Museum, also housed in the renovated depot building, clarifying how the former train station will be used. If the agreement is accepted, the chamber will use the eastern part, the museum will be in the western part, and a community meeting room will be changed to an exhibit room under town control.

The town also may apply for funding for a possible annex or other improvements to the building.

Council also will consider a resolution asking Norfolk Southern to reconsider its decision to retire its 611 steam engine, which played a big part June 11 in the town's dedication of its renovated depot.
