PUPILS TO SING AT NORFOLK MEET

Fifty 5th- and 6th-grade students who make up the Pulaski County Melodies will leave for Norfolk this week to sing at the Virginia Music Educators' Association Conference as part of its 50th anniversary celebration.

The choir, which is directed by Connie Russell, was invited to participate at the concert at the Marriott Hotel in Norfolk Friday and Saturday.

The invitation was an honor, but the estimated cost of the bus trip is $5,000 and efforts are continuing to raise the money. The cost is about $100 for each student.

Associate Superintendent Phyllis Bishop told the School Board last Wednesday that more than $3,000 had been raised at that time from businesses, civic groups, parents and friends.

Contributions can be made by contacting Russell at 674-6237, or Nancy Ballinger, the school system's coordinator of programs for talented and gifted, at 980-3850.
