PILOT REMAINS HOSPITALIZED AFTER CRASH

The pilot of a small, single-engine plane that crashed in Bedford County on Sunday was listed in critical condition Monday in Lynchburg General Hospital's surgical intensive care unit.

Anne K. Miller, 44, of Goode, was admitted to the hospital Sunday afternoon in serious condition with multiple lacerations and fractures, but her condition was changed to critical later that night.

Miller took off about 1:15 p.m. from a dirt airstrip near Virginia 706 for a pleasure ride in the one-person, orange-and-white airplane. Shortly after takeoff, the plane lost power. While attempting to make an emergency landing in a nearby field, Miller lost control of the craft, and it crashed into a thickly wooded gully near the Big Otter River.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.
