IT'S TIME TO TAKE TO THE WOODS

For those of you who haven't looked out the window in a while, it's late fall.

And for those of you who haven't looked at a calendar for a while, Thanksgiving is next week.

Those two things mean hunting season to me.

Firearms deer season opened Monday. Muzzleloading and small game season got under way a couple of weeks before that.

Thus, there could be no better time than the present for a poem about a deer hunt by reader JACK MASELLA of Princeton, W.Va. A cook at Virginia Tech, Masella has been writing poetry for more than 30 years and has published two collections of his work.

"The Hunter and the Hunted"

As the deer pass,

I look through my glass.

What men have done

to create fun!

The shot whistles out,

and blood squirts a sad but happy bout.

The victor rushes to his conquest,

and lying dead is a deer.

HOOPING IT UP: The Pulaski Parks and Recreation Department will hold an organizational meeting Thursday for the winter adult basketball league. The meeting will be at the town municipal building at 7 p.m.

All team managers must attend the meeting to discuss the rules and regulations for the upcoming season. The entry fee is $250 per team. To be eligible to participate, players must live in Pulaski County, work full time in the county, attend New River Community College or be graduates of Pulaski County High School.

League play begins Dec. 4. Games will be played at the Pulaski Armory.

YOUNG GRIDDERS: The Dublin Cowboys captured the Pulaski County Pee Wee Sandlot Football title with a 27-6 win over the Pulaski Red Raiders.

ALAN WHEELING scored all of Dublin's points. Included in his efforts was an 80-yard touchdown run. Wheeling finished with a league-high 108 points.

MATT ROAN and J.T. TWINE were the Cowboys' leading tacklers.

It was the second straight league title and third in four years for the Dublin (9-0).

DYLAN MOORE scored the Red Raiders' touchdown. Pulaski (8-3) had reached the final with a 20-6 win over the Riverlawn Rams in the semifinals.

The Pulaski Gold Raiders fell to West Salem 8-0 in the championship game of the 8-and-under division of the Roanoke Valley Sandlot Super Bowl.

Pulaski got strong defensive play from JUSTIN ROSS, AMIR BROWN, GREG SARTIN and CHRIS MATTOX.

KICKING AROUND: The Pulaski Hornets won another title while the Pulaski Wildcats were a surprise winner in the Pulaski County Youth Soccer League tournaments.

The Hornets added the tournament trophy to their regular season championship with a 3-1 win over the Draper Fury in the 13-and-over league tournament final.

CHRIS QUESENBERRY, MATT BURTON and WILL HAGER each scored for the Hornets, JASON DEAN recorded an assist while Dean, Quesenberry and MIKE SANTOLLA handled the goalie duties.

JOHN KELLY KINSER scored the lone goal for the Fury.

The Hornets were taken to overtime in their semifinals. But goals by Hager and JOE SLOMKA allowed the Hornets to prevail over the Galax Strikers 3-1. Slomka had the Hornets' lone goal in regulation.

The Fury reached the final by edging the Pulaski Counts 2-1. Kinser had both goals, including the game-winner with just two minutes to play. Goalie KEITH FERRELL stopped all but one shot that came his way.

The Wildcats beat the Dublin Steelers 7-0 to win the 10-and-under league tournament.

PATRICK TENPENNY and DUSTY TURNER each scored twice in the easy win while JOHN HEDGE, PATRICK REDDING and BRANDON FARMERadded a goal each. JOSIAH LONG posted a shutout in goal.

The Steelers upset regular-season champion Pulaski Top Gun 3-2 in overtime to reach the final. TYLER MORRIS scored the winning goal after JASON WITT had scored twice in regulation.

The Wildcats slipped past the Dublin Raiders 5-4 in the other semifinal. Hedge scored the winning goal in overtime. It was the fourth goal of the match for Hedge, tying the league record for playoff games.

SCHOLASTIC SPORTS NRV: Pulaski Middle School split its last two football games and finished the season 4-5.

Second half touchdowns by DANIEL COMBITHS and BRANDON MILLER lifted the Orioles over Glenvar 18-6.

Combiths' deciding score was set up by a 46-yard scamper by JERRY DUNCAN.

ROY BOWDEN then stopped the ensuing Glenvar drive with a fumble recovery.

Miller scored the Pulaski touchdown in the first half on a 58-yard run.

In the season finale, Graham rolled off 22 straight points late in the first half and held on to beat Pulaski 22-20.

Miller and KWAI SCOTT each scored second-half touchdown to bring the Orioles close, but on both occasions fumbles cost Pulaski a chance for two-point conversions.

SHAY McMILLIAN had given Pulaski an 8-0 lead with a 45-yard run and the conversion run in the first period.
