BUFFALOES CONTINUE TO CRUISE

It's tournament time. So Floyd County turned up the pressure Tuesday night.

And Chilhowie felt that pressure, falling to the Buffaloes 88-46 in the first round of the Region C girls' basketball tournament.

The victory - the 51st in a row for the 1993 Group A champions - propels the Buffaloes into a regional semifinal against Galax, a team they have beaten twice this season. The Maroon Tide advanced with a 53-28 triumph over Parry McCluer.

Floyd County (24-0) removed any doubt as to the outcome when it ran off 14 points in a three-minute span early in the second quarter. That pushed what had been an 11-point advantage to a 40-15 bulge.

``We just pressured them really hard,'' said Sara Conner, a sophomore who scored eight points during the surge. ``We've been working on the press a lot in practice this week. We've worked on it all year.''

Overall, Floyd County forced 29 turnovers, including 11 in the second period.

``We started out pretty well breaking their press,'' said Cindy Blevins, Chilhowie's coach. ``Then, we started committing turnovers after that. We left them open for the 3-pointers. They're a good team. I have to give them a lot of credit.''

Floyd County hit a season-high 10 3-pointers, including four by point guard Melissa Cantrell.

Two of Cantrell`s bombs came in the opening period, when she scored 10 and the Buffaloes moved in front by 14 points. Chilhowie (17-7) briefly closed to seven points. But by the end of the quarter, the lead was back up to 12.

Floyd County's lead reached 31 points by intermission and stayed at least that large during the final two periods. The Buffaloes' largest advantage was 86-40 with a little less than two minutes left.

Senior center Carrie Chaffin led Floyd County with a game-high 21 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.
