COX POWERS GALAX WIN

Tammy Cox scored a game-high 24 points - including the 1,000th point of her career - in leading Galax over Parry McCluer 53-28 Tuesday night in the first round of the Region C girls' basketball tournament.

Galax, the Mountain Empire District regular-season and tournament champion, trailed 10-9 after one quarter, but Cox brought the Tide back in the second.

Galax held Parry McCluer to eight second-half points. Crystal Humphries scored 12 for the Blues, the No. 2 team from the Pioneer District.

Galax plays Floyd County in a Region C semifinal game Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at John Battle High School.
