Trimble Bailey, daughter of Mike and Denise Bailey, recently won the Roanoke County Junior Miss title. Bailey, a senior at Roanoke Valley Christian School, was awarded a $500 cash scholarship, a gold medallion and an all-expense-paid trip to the state finals.
Bailey also won a $100 U.S. savings bond for academic achievement.
Bailey and Sara Ivey, daughter of Susan and Henry Ivey, tied for the Spirit Award and will share a $200 cash scholarship. Ivey, a student at William Byrd High School, also won the fitness category.
Jennifer Cook, daughter of Dennis Cook and Ellen Hatcher, won the overall Creative and Performing Arts competition. Cook, a student at Cave Spring High School, received a $100 cash scholarship.
Division winners for scholastic achievement included Nanda Channaiah, daughter of A.C. and Jay Channaiah and student at William Byrd High School; and Tamara Payden-Travers, daughter of Jack and Christine Payden-Travers and student at Franklin County High School. Travers also was division winner for the panel evaluation. Angela Sardena, daughter of Robert and Deborah Hill and student at Staunton River High School; Heather Crowe, daughter of Susan Rourke and Thomas Crowe and student at Franklin County High School; and Cathy Welford, daughter of Mack and Alice Welford and student at Glenvar High School, share a three-way tie for the Presence and Composure division.
Five contestants from the pageant will compete for the state finals to be held in March. They are: Bailey; Ivey; Welford; Crowe; and Amy Bragg, daughter of Kevin and Carolyn Lilly and student at Staunton River High School. The winner of the state finals will advance to the national program in 1995.
The winner of a raffle for a weeklong trip to Myrtle Beach was Crystal Wray from Rocky Mount. Money from the drawing, held at a Northside High School basketball tournament, was used for scholarship money.
Travelogue film set for Sunday
The Kiwanis Club of Roanoke will present the second installment of its 36th annual Travel and Adventure Film series Sunday.
"Portugal's Places and Faces," presented by Dale Smith, will be held at Patrick Henry High School's Clara Black auditorium beginning at 2 p.m.
Ticket cost is $4 for adults, $2 for students 18 and under. Children under 12 are free.
Following Sunday's show, the club will present four more programs during January, February, March and April of next year. All shows are held at the high school auditorium.
Each "travelogue" attraction is a full-length color film, photographed and narrated by the artist in person. Profits from the film series support various community service projects in the Roanoke Valley.

YMCA banquets to be held Monday
The YMCA Family Center is sponsoring the 62nd annual Father and Son Banquet Monday.
The banquet will be held at 6:30 p.m. at High Street Baptist Church Anchor of Hope.
Harold Deane, Lucy Addison High School alumnus, former men's basketball coach and current professor of health and physical education at Virginia State University, will be the guest speaker.
Tickets, which can be purchased at the YMCA office or at the door the evening of the banquet, cost $5.
Children's Christmas parade is Saturday
The Grandin Road Village Business and Professionals' Association and the Raleigh Court Civic League are sponsoring the annual Children's Mini Christmas Parade Saturday.
The parade will assemble at Christ Lutheran Church at 10:15 a.m. and will begin at 11. Participants and spectators should bring canned or nonperishable foods to be collected from curbsides and donated to the Roanoke Area Ministries' RAM House.
Any business or organization interested in entering a float should contact Richard Eakin at 342-2691. Floats should be the size of a child's wagon and pulled by children under age 14.
Support group elects officers for 1994
James Krantz has been elected to serve as president of the Roanoke Valley Mended Hearts Chapter 144 for the 1994-95 term.
Other officers chosen were: the Rev. J. Harris Stephens, vice president; Helen Ewald, secretary, and Jim Tapley, treasurer.
Salem Museum contest still accepting entries
The deadline for the Salem Museum mascot contest has been extended to Dec. 13 because of busy schedules in the areas' schools.
Mary Crockett Hill, director of the museum, said she has received about 50 entries from children in several Salem schools.
But the contest is open to elementary school children throughout the Roanoke Valley, and Hill said several teachers told her that busy fall schedules had prevented them from promoting the contest among children in their schools.
For that reason, Hill decided to extend the deadline beyond the original Nov. 1 date.
In the contest, children are asked to draw a picture of some sort of animal, real or imaginary, that could become the museum's mascot.
The contest rules say the mascot can be "huge or tiny, furry, slimy or scaly, animal, vegetable, mineral or anything else you choose."
Entries should be sent to the museum at 801 E. Main St. in Salem.
Hill said she plans to have a display of all the entries in January.
Salem Kiwanis Club elects 1994 officers
Bill Murdoch was recently elected president of the Salem Kiwanis Club for 1994-95.
Other officers elected were Buddy Rodgers, vice president, and Bill Rich, secretary/treasurer.
Elected to the board of directors were: Paul Dotson, Frank Derk, Dave Robbins, Bill Puryear, Cecil Kelly, Ron Wright, John Cannaday and Paul Curran, past president.
