CHURCHES JOIN TO HOLD THANKSGIVING SERVICES

Community Thanksgiving services in which two or more congregations join are a tradition of the holiday in most Roanoke Valley neighborhoods. Offerings are often given to a ministry that directly assists the needy. These are a few the services that will be held in the Roanoke Valley.

WILLIAMSON ROAD AREA CHURCHES will worship Sunday at 7 p.m. at Huntington Court United Methodist Church, at Williamson Road and Huntington Boulevard. The speaker will be the Rev. Dr. Alton Washington, pastor. Special music will be presented.

THE CAVE SPRING AREA SERVICE is at Colonial Presbyterian Church, 3550 Poplar Drive S.W. on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Preaching will be the Rev. Laney Mofield, associate pastor of Colonial Avenue Baptist Church. The offering goes to the jail ministry of the Rev. Richard Harris. A can of food also is requested for Roanoke Area Ministries. The nursery will be open.

RALEIGH COURT AREA CHURCHES will unite for two services at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, 1837 Grandin Road S.W. The first will be Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., and the second will be Thanksgiving morning at 9:30. The Rev. Gene Edmunds of the host church preaches. A nursery is provided. The jail chaplaincy ministry and Roanoke Area Ministries will receive the offering. Six congregations support this service.

CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH, 608 Campbell Ave. S.W., is host to the inner-city Roanoke interfaith worship this year. The service will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. with the Calvary choir providing music. The Rev. Jim Rivers of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will preach. Canned food and money donations will go to Samaritan Inn, a ministry to needy Roanoke Valley families.

MOUNT PLEASANT COMMUNITY worship will be Wednesday night at 7:30 at the United Methodist Church, 3009 Mount Pleasant Blvd. Preaching will be the Rev. Jerry Cloninger of the nearby Baptist church.
