VINTON PUBLIC HEARING DRAWS NO COMMENTS

A public hearing on a proposal to raise the 911 telephone fee in Vinton drew no comments Tuesday, and Town Council now appears ready to adopt the higher fee at its Dec. 6 meeting.

Council has proposed raising the monthly fee from 46 cents to $1 for each telephone line to cover the cost of equipment needed to upgrade Vinton's system to keep it compatable with the soon-to-be upgraded 911 system in Roanoke County.

The 911 fee is added to the telephone bills of each telephone customer in Vinton.

This week's public hearing was set last month after Town Manager Clay Goodman gave council members a detailed review of finances and the need for upgrading the equipment. But no one spoke for or against the proposal during the hearing, and Mayor Charles Hill said the question would be put on council's agenda for its next meeting.
