RELIGION BRIEFS

THE SINGING CHRISTMAS TREE, an annual presentation of Advent music by a choir mounted on a 30-foot platform resembling an evergreen, is scheduled 5 p.m. Dec. 10 and 5 and 8 p.m. Dec. 11 at Calvary Baptist Church, 608 Campbell Ave. S.W.

The programs, which fill the church, include the music of a 70-voice choir, 30-piece orchestra, organ, handbells and narrator. It is free, and child care is available.

Calvary Baptist also will present an Advent Celebration of music at 11 a.m. Dec. 4. This includes music by the choirs for children, youth and adults under the direction of Helen F. Robertson.

FIRST CHURCH OF GOD with headquarters in Anderson, Ind., is beginning a new ministry to American Indians through work with a congregation in Wounded Knee, S.D. In August 1995, a group from the church headed by the Rev. James B. Millner, pastor of a Roanoke congregation, will go to the South Dakota community to teach classes and share cultural and religious experiences.

OAKLAND BAPTIST CHURCH, 3623 Roundhill Ave. N.W., will sponsor a concert with the theme "Worthy of Worship." It will be held 7 p.m. Sunday and will include music by several choirs. The progam is free, and a nursery will be open.

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF HOLLINS on Reservoir Road will sponsor a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday to benefit the Youth Usher Board. The Pig River Youth Mass Choir of Rocky Mount will perform.

THIRD WORLD HANDICRAFTS, distributed by a Church of the Brethren agency based in New Windsor, Md., will be sold from 9:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday and Nov. 27 at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, 1837 Grandin Road S.W. The mission committee of the church will offer the articles in the fellowship hall.

The sale helps low-income people who have little market for the products in their own communities. Call 343-5541 for more information.
