LATE-ARRIVING `O' ENABLES W&L TO CLOSE IN HURRY

At one point in the football season, there was some question whether Washington and Lee would score a touchdown, much less win a game or more than one game.

W&L finally scored its first touchdown in the fourth game and, one week later, got its first extra point of the season. Proving that a little offense can be a dangerous thing, the Generals won their last four games and five of the last six for their second winning season (5-4) since 1988.

W&L's resurgence coincided with the decision to feature Seth McKinley at tailback. McKinley, a freshman from Johnstown, Pa., had a total of 12 carries in the first 3 1/2 games, but finished with 667 yards for the season. He rushed for 100 yards or more in four of the last five games.

The development of a running game only helped the Generals' passing attack. Sophomore Brooks Fischer passed for 1,051 yards and seven touchdowns, five to senior William Propst. Propst finished with a career-high 56 receptions and became the first player to win three Old Dominion Athletic Conference receiving titles despite sitting out the 1993 season.

FERRUM, TOO: Also finishing strong was Ferrum, which won its last three games after a 1-5 start, two of them over name Division III opponents, Montclair State and Emory & Henry. For what it's worth, the Panthers were 19 points from 8-1 in coach Dave Davis' first season.

QUARTERBACKS DOWN: Wake Forest quarterback Rusty LaRue will not play in the Deacons' season finale Saturday at Georgia Tech because of a separated shoulder that could keep him sidelined for the start of basketball season. ... North Carolina State coach Mike O'Cain said a bruised left (non-throwing) probably will keep quarterback Terry Harvey out of the lineup against Florida State. ... Jason Stanicek will be available for North Carolina on Saturday at Duke, but Mike Thomas may start at quarterback if Stanicek is not close to 100 percent.

GOODPASTURE HONORED: Senior defensive back Richard Goodpasture from Salem has been named a permanent co-captain at Wake Forest. Goodpasture was one of four Wake players nominated for All-ACC.

IVEY CONTRIBUTING: Defensive tackle Mark Ivey, a junior from Martsinville, has been starting on an every-other-game basis for Appalachian State, which takes an 8-2 record into Saturday's game with VMI, with the losses by a total of five points.

Ivey and sophomore Jason Hatcher share time and have been given the freedom to decide who starts. Freshman defensive lineman John Huffman from Northside High School in Roanoke has played in nine games for the Mountaineers, who were picked fifth in the Southern Conference but will get an automatic bid to the Division I-AA playoffs if they win Saturday.

RECRUITING: Magna Vista offensive tackle George Seals said he has scheduled visits to Virginia Tech, North Carolina State, Virginia and South Carolina. The South Carolina contact is assistant Rickey Bustle, who once recruited Henry County for Tech.

William Fleming defensive tackle John St. Clair, a preseason All-American who was slowed by a foot injury, has a final four of Virginia, N.C. State, Georgia and Florida. St. Clair (6-7, 265) is passing up basketball for indoor track.

Three linebacker prospects from North Carolina say they are leaning to Virginia: twins Wali and Jay Rainer from West Charlotte and J.J. McQueen from Andrews High School in High Point. Wali Rainer is considered one of the top 10 prospects in the state.

Virginia Tech is in the lead for junior college teammates Myron Newsome and Greg Melvin from Butler County (Kan.) College. Newsome and Melvin are former all-state players from, respectively, Hampton High School and Bayside High School in Virginia Beach.

SIGNEES: Richmond's basketball staff has signed 6-1 guard Jonathan Baker from Hampton High School. Baker's brother, Gannon, is at North Carolina-Wilmington after a tour at Duquesne. ... Jermaine Harmon, a 6-6 forward from Guyana by way of Stamford, Conn., has signed with William and Mary.

WOMEN'S HOOPS: Floyd County center Carrie Chaffin has signed a letter of intent with North Carolina-Wilmington, becoming the second Lady Buffaloes player to go Division I. Chaffin, who averages 12 points and 7.5 rebounds for the top-ranked team in Timesland, follows teammate Leigh-Ann Pursifull, who earlier committed to Winthrop.

BENEFIT BASKETBALL: Fans who attend first-round games Saturday at the Salem Bank & Trust Tip-Off Tournament can gain free admission by donating a new or ``quality'' used jackets to the Roanoke Valley Christmas Store, host Roanoke College announced.

Baptist Bible College of Clarks Summit, Pa., will defend its championship in the third Cavalier Christian College Classic tipping off Friday at 6 p.m. at Lord Botetourt High School. Mount Vernon Nazarene, Warren Wilson and Warner Southern fill out the field.

PANTHER INDUCTEES: Linda Perdue, a four-sport standout who played No.1 on the women's tennis team, was one of five charter members of the Ferrum College Alumni Sports Hall of Fame formed last week. All attended Ferrum when it was a junior college.

Perdue, from Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke, played tennis at East Tennessee State and later became a distance runner who has completed the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. She teaches in the Roanoke school system.

Perdue was joined by ex-Ferrum baseball player Hal Baird, who coached Auburn to the College World Series in 1994; Ed George, co-captain of the Panthers' 1967 football team and a pro with the Baltimore Colts and Philadelphia Eagles; David Hobbs, now the head basketball coach at Alabama; and Larry Robinson, an All-American at Ferrum who later captained the men's basketball team at Tennessee.

NON-REVENUE: Franklin County gymnast Kelly Newcomb has accepted a scholarship to Towson State. Newcomb, who trains at the Roanoke Academy of Gymnastics, was the Virginia Level 10 champ after winning Level 9 championships in 1992 and '93.
