3 ROANOKE COUNTY ROAD PROJECTS GET TRANSPORTATION BOARD'S OK

The Commonwealth Transportation Board approved proposed improvements Thursday on three Roanoke County roads - Yellow Mountain Road, Colonial Avenue and Cresthill Drive.

A 0.9-mile section of Yellow Mountain Road will be widened to two 12-foot lanes and straightened, beginning at U.S. 220. The road is a major access to 220 for Southeast Roanoke and Roanoke County residents.

Four families will be displaced to provide land for the road work. The project is estimated to cost $1.9million.

Colonial Avenue, near its intersection with Penn Forest Boulevard, will be improved to increase visibility and safety for motorists.

The roadway, which currently carries 5,723 vehicles per day, will have two 11-foot lanes with 6-foot shoulders. The project's estimated cost is $250,000.

Cresthill Drive, a major artery between Garst Mill Road and Virginia 419, will receive improvements to two culverts over Mudlick Creek and new 15-foot lanes approaching them. The estimated cost is $326,000.

All three projects are expected to begin next fall.
