KEN BROWN TO MISS UVA-TECH

A hamstring injury will keep Virginia Tech linebacker Ken Brown out of Saturday's game against 16th-ranked Virginia.

The senior, Tech's second-leading tackler and perhaps its best overall defensive player, strained the hamstring Nov.12 against Rutgers and has been listed as doubtful for the noon kickoff at Lane Stadium.

``He's not going to play,'' said Eddie Ferrell, Tech's trainer. ``It hasn't been a week. ... He thinks he's going to [play], but unless something happens overnight, I don't think he will.''

Brown, considered one of the Big East Conference's best linebackers, has 93 tackles (six for losses), two sacks, a fumble recovery, five pass breakups and two interceptions.

Defensive tackle Jim Baron, tied for second among the Hokies with five sacks, has practiced this week and will dress Saturday, Ferrell said. Baron had been listed as doubtful with a sprained hip.

The Virginia High School League removed one team from the Group AAA playoffs and rejected the appeal of another that it should be in the Group AA playoffs, which begin today.

Robert Button, a VHSL progam supervisor, said the league's appeals board voted to remove Thomas Dale from the Central Division pairings, replacing it with Prince George.

The decision reverses the appeals panel's ruling Sunday that Thomas Dale would not have to forfeit games against Hopewell and Dinwiddie for using an allegedly ineligible player.

Button declined to provide any details behind the panel's decision.

The panel also upheld an earlier decision that cost Loudoun County a spot in the Group AA field. Loudoun forfeited its season-opening victory for using a player whose eligibility was in doubt. The league later established the player was eligible, but made the eligibility effective from the time of the decision, allowing the forfeit to stand.

If the forfeit had been rescinded, the Group AA Division 3 and 4 brackets would have had to have been redrawn to include Loudoun County.

Radford University's sister act in women's soccer was a hit this season as Missy and Nadine Gaitka earned honorable-mention status on the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association All-State team. The Gaitkas were joined on the honorable-mention list by teammate Dee Dee Herndon and Virginia Tech's Cindy Zier.

Virginia's Danielle Desfosses was named to the first team, a group that featured George Mason's Tammy Pearman as player of the year. William and Mary's John Daly was named coach of the year.

Virginia Tech's Jennifer Schmidt has been named to the All-Metro Conference volleyball second team in balloting by the league's coaches. The junior middle blocker ranks second on the team in kills.
