THE BIG GAME WILL BE THERE BY AIR

Football fans not already holding tickets to "the big game" at Lane Stadium today shouldn't have any trouble finding it on the airwaves. Fans can watch the high-noon showdown between VIRGINIA TECH and the UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA on WSLS-TV (Channel 10), or listen to it on any of the Virginia Tech Sports Network stations.

Some local radio outlets also have their own pre-game specials. Radio coverage begins at 9 a.m. with "The Armchair Quarterback" on WFNR (710 AM), this week live from the Lane Stadium press box. Levi Garrett moderates a panel of sports savants as they tackle listeners' questions and comments on regional sports as Tech and UVA gear up for the game. Then, at 10 a.m., listeners can join Garrett at Lane Stadium for "The Virginia Tech Tailgate Party" on KOOL Country, WBNK (100.7 FM), or they can tune in "The Tech Connection Tailgate Party" on WJJJ (1260 AM) and WVVV (104.9 FM).

"The Hokie Countdown" - with Bill Roth and Mike Burnop from the Tech sports network - airs at 11 a.m. on WJJJ and WVVV, as well as WNRV (990 AM), WKEX (1430 AM), WRAD (1460 AM), and WRIQ (101.7 FM). "The Point After" call-in show follows on many Tech sports network affiliates.

Eagle Country 107, WPSK (107.1 FM) once again is the flagship affiliate for RADFORD UNIVERSITY HIGHLANDERS BASKETBALL broadcasts via the Radford University Sports Network, the network has announced. In addition to game broadcasts this season, the network produces pre- and post-game shows. "On the Bench with Ron Bradley," a preview of the next game, airs twice daily on game days, and a wrap-up of highlights airs the morning after game broadcasts. On television, the network's "Radford University Basketball" airs Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. on WSLS (Channel 10) and on American Cable Entertainment Channel 9 in Radford, Fairlawn and Christiansburg. It's also cablecast throughout the Mid-Atlantic on Home Team Sports.

"Big East Game Day Show:" Saturdays, 8 a.m., on WVVV (104.9 FM) and WJJJ (1260 AM).

West Virginia University football: Today, the Mountaineers are at home against Boston College. The game airs at 11:30 a.m. on WFNR (710 AM).

NASCAR: Sunday, 12:45 p.m., The Pro Gold 400 airs from Myrtle Beach Speedway on WBNK (100.7 FM) and WNRV (990 AM).

Washington Redskins football: Sunday, the 'skins are at Dallas. Air time is noon on WFNR (710 AM).

"Virginia Tech Update:" Monday through Friday, 7:10 a.m., WVVV (104.9 FM) and WJJJ (1260 AM). "Hokie Hotline" coach's show airs Mondays, 7 p.m.

"NASCAR LIVE " Tuesdays, 7 p.m., on WBNK (100.7 FM) and WFNR (710 AM).

"RU Sports Update:" Dave Hunziker, the sports voice of the Highlanders, reports Fridays during newscasts at 7:45 a.m., 12:05 p.m. and 4 p.m. on WRAD (1460 AM).

"Hudson's Huddle:" New River Valley high school football preview, Fridays, 5:40-6 p.m., WRAD (1460 AM) and WRIQ (101.7 FM).

Giles Spartans: Football playoffs, Friday, 7 p.m., WBNK (100.7 FM) and WNRV (990 AM).

Blacksburg Indians: Football playoffs, Fridays , 7 p.m., WKEX (1430 AM).

Sunday, 8 a.m.-noon, Bob Kingsley is the host of "American Country Countdown" on Eagle Country 107, WPSk (107.1 FM).

"It's Your Deal" - a buy-sell-or-trade program with Heather Massie - now is heard Monday through Friday, 12:05-12:30 p.m., followed by gospel music until 1 p.m. on WKEX (1430 AM).

"PB'S Cafe" with Patrick Barton showcases the work of local writers Fridays, 6:30-7 p.m., on Virginia Tech's student-run WUVT (90.7 FM).

"Blues from the Red Rooster" features current and classic blue Fridays, 8 p.m., on Radford University's WVRU (89.9 FM).

Karen Travis - vice president of Travis Broadcasting which owns WBNK (100.7 FM), WFNR (710 AM) and WNRV (990 AM) in the New River Valley - has been appointed vice president and general manager of Virginia Network Inc.'s five Lynchburg and Roanoke radio stations, which include WRDJ (105.3 FM).

Cablecasts:

The Radford University Wind Ensemble, directed by Mark Camphouse, plays a selection from their fall concert on "Community Speaking" on American Cable Entertainment channel 9, Sundays, 6 p.m., Tuesdays, 5 p.m., Wednesdays, noon and Thursdays, 7 p.m. 831-5180.

"Spotlight on Blacksburg" this month features an interview with Joy Herbert, senior programs supervisor with Blacksburg Parks and Recreation, Tuesday, 7 p.m., on WTOB (Channel 2), Blacksburg public-government access television. The live Blacksburg Town Council meeting cablecast follows at 7:30 p.m.

"Krafty Kids," an arts and crafts series for children and parents, is broadcast Monday at 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday at 7 p.m. on WTOB (Channel 2), Blacksburg.
