REPORTED EARNINGS

Charming Shoppes

Charming Shoppes Inc., Bensalem, Pa., parent of Fashion Bug and Fashion Bug Plus stores, reported net income of $7.5 million, or 7 cents per share, on sales of $306.3 million for its third quarter ended Oct. 29, compared with year-earlier $15.2 million, or 14 cents, on sales of $313 million. For the nine months, net income was $39.5 million, or 37 cents per share, on sales of $927.3 million, compared with $51.9 million, or 48 cents, before an accounting charge, on sales of $896.9 million.

Smithfield Foods

Smithfield Foods Inc., Smithfield parent of Valleydale Foods Inc. of Salem, reported net income of $7.8 million, or 45 cents per share, on sales of $385.4 million for its second quarter ended Oct. 30, compared with year-earlier $745,000, or 4 cents, on sales of $345.9 million. For the six months, net income was $10.2 million, or 58 cents per share, on sales of $728 million, compared with $554,000, or 1 cent, on sales of $645.1 million.

Wal-Mart Stores

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Bentonville, Ark., retailer, reported net income of $588.1 million, or 26 cents per share, on sales of $20.42 billion in its third quarter ended Oct. 31, compared with year-earlier $518.7 million, or 23 cents, on sales of $16.83 billion. For the nine months, net income was $1.65 billion, or 72 cents per share, on sales of $58.05 billion, compared with $1.47 billion, or 64 cents, on sales of $46.98 billion.

Westvaco Corp.

Westvaco Corp., a paper, packaging and chemicals manufacturer operating a bleached board mill in Covington, reported net income of $103.6 million, or $1.55 per share, on sales of $2.61 billion for its fiscal year ended Oct. 31, compared with year-earlier $104.3 million, or $1.57, on sales of $2.34 billion. For the fourth quarter, net income was $51.3 million, or 77 cents per share, on sales of $762.5 million, compared with year-earlier net loss of $13.7 million, equal to 20 cents per share, on sales of $617.9 million.

Woolworth Corp.

Woolworth Corp., New York retailer operating Woolworth, Champs and Foot Locker stores, reported net income of $37 million, or 28 cents per share, on revenues of $2.10 billion for its third quarter ended Oct. 29, compared with a year-earlier net loss of $350 million, equal to $2.66 a share, on revenues of $2.39 billion. For the nine months, the net loss was $43 million, equal to 33 cents per share, on revenues of $5.73 billion, compared with a net loss of $384 million, equal to $2.92, on revenues of $6.81 billion.
