BLACKSBURG - The New River Valley Environmental Coalition will meet Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Virginia Museum of Natural History to discuss a proposed retirement community in Blacksburg.
Duane Hyde, a planner for the Town of Blacksburg, and Bob Rogers of Architectural Alternatives will present information on the proposal.

Salvation Army helps those laid off
FAIRLAWN - In cooperation with local 3-495 of the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union, the Salvation Army will offer holiday assistance to Radford Army Ammunition Plant workers who are being laid off.
Salvation Army representatives will accept applications for toys and food baskets for workers and their families Nov. 30, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at the union hall on Peppers Ferry Road.
Applicants should provide proof of termination when applying for assistance.

SHARE offers food packages
CHRISTIANSBURG - SHARE Virginia, a nonprofit food distribution and community service program, is offering food packages for $13 plus tax and 2 hours of community service at local stations throughout the New River Valley through Dec. 5. The packages include over 30 pounds of meats, fresh fruit and vegetables and dry goods. The packages are available as holiday gifts.
Everyone is eligible to participate.

Library gets recognition
CHRISTIANSBURG - The Virginia Library Association recognized Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library at a conference in Williamsburg for its program providing instructional classes and free access to the National Information Infrastructure through the Blacksburg Electronic Village.
Steve Helm, staff computer specialist, expained the program to the group as well as what information is available and what equipment is needed to provide access.

Giles United Fund at one-third mark
PEARISBURG - The Giles County United Fund has reached the one-third mark in this year's fund-raising drive, raising $35,849 toward its goal of $110,000.
The figure does not include funds employers donate to match the employees' donations after the drive concludes.
The drive will continue until early December.

Reception set for cultural center
CHRISTIANSBURG - The New River Arts Council and the Gallery of Local Artists will hold a reception to benefit the development of a New River Valley cultural center Sunday, Nov. 20 from 2 to 6 p.m. in the Furniture Market Building.
The event includes art, music, and refreshments. Admission is $25 per couple or $15 for individuals.
