NAPOLEON ARTIFACTS RECOVERED IN CANADA

WEST VANCOUVER, British Columbia - A death mask of Napoleon that was stolen from a West Vancouver home along with other imperial artifacts was recovered after a hit-and-run accident.

The driver of a rental van fled the accident scene Thursday, leaving some of the items behind.

``We located a box in the van that contained the mask, hat and a facial bust of the emperor,'' police Constable Jamie Gibson said.

Among the Napoleonic items still missing were a lock of hair, a sword, several medals, a telescope and various letters and orders.

Syrian succession speculation rises

DAMASCUS, Syria - The son of President Hafez Assad graduated Thursday from a military academy, fueling speculation that he is being groomed to succeed his father.

Speculation about 29-year-old Bashar Assad as a possible heir apparent began after his older brother Basil died in a car accident in January. Basil, 31, was an army major and head of the presidential security apparatus.

Bashar Assad graduated Thursday as a captain commanding a tank regiment. He joined the academy in the city of Homs shortly after his brother's death, cutting short his training in England as an ophthalmologist.
