Syrian succession speculation rises
DAMASCUS, Syria - The son of President Hafez Assad graduated Thursday from a military academy, fueling speculation that he is being groomed to succeed his father.
Speculation about 29-year-old Bashar Assad as a possible heir apparent began after his older brother Basil died in a car accident in January. Basil, 31, was an army major and head of the presidential security apparatus.
Bashar Assad graduated Thursday as a captain commanding a tank regiment. He joined the academy in the city of Homs shortly after his brother's death, cutting short his training in England as an ophthalmologist.
