HIGHLANDERS SIGN TRIO FOR BASKETBALL

Radford University signed four players for the 1995-96 women's basketball season during the early signing period: Kim Cruise of Pulaski County, Shannon Graff of Rutland, S.D., Iris Hughes of Charleston, S.C., and Dana Schnell of Dallastown, Pa.

The 6-foot-2 Cruise averaged 11 points, eight rebounds and four blocks per game for the Cougars last season as a junior. Graff, a 5-7 guard, averaged 20 points and seven rebounds for Rutland High School last year. The 5-9 Hughes averaged 14.8 points, 10 rebounds and 6.4 blocks for Middleton High School, and Schnell, a 5-11 forward, averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds for York County.

Fifth-seeded Virginia Tech beat No.4 UNC Charlotte 15-7, 15-13, 15-4 in Tampa, Fla. All-Metro performer Jennifer Schmidt had 15 kills for the Hokies, who next play top-seeded Louisville.

Duke defeated Virginia 15-6, 15-9, 15-8 in the first round of the ACC volleyball tournament at Chapel Hill, N.C. Virginia finished 10-24.

Delaine Mast, who is involved at the national level with the United States Tennis Association and with World Team Tennis, will address a meeting of the Roanoke Valley Tennis Association on Sunday. The meeting is 1 p.m. at the Dean Witter offices on Starkey Road.

Mast is a national trainer for community development with the USTA, and is a national program coordinator for World Team Tennis. She will focus on helping the RVTA develop a volunteer base to expand the programs in which the RVTA is involved. The meeting is open to the general public. For information, call 772-4408.
